Boogie Board Paperless LCD Writing Tablet Review

When you hear "boogie board" what do you think of? I immediately think of the ocean and one of those little foam boards you use to ride waves. And while that is definitely a "boogie board," it is not the Boogie Board Paperless LCD Writing Tablet! This is one of the neatest things I have had a chance to play around with in quite some time. It is basically a replacement for pen and paper to take notes, jot down ideas, draw pictures, or play games with your kids.

The Boogie Board is an 8.75" x 5.5" x 1/8" thin durable plastic board that weighs just 4 ounces! Because of its size, you can take the Boogie Board with you wherever you go...including the beach. Just don't try to ride a wave with it! The LCD screen is pressure sensitive, so the harder you press down the thicker the line will be on the board. You can use the included stainless steel stylus or use any other suitable instrument, even your finger.

When I first got my hands on this, the first thing I thought of was one of those Magic Slates that we grew up with where you draw with the little plastic stylus on a piece of clear plastic that covered a waxy black board. Then when you were ready to "erase" your drawing, you would simply lift the clear plastic paper and then start all over again. I also thought the popular magnetic doodle toy that uses magnets to display images and then "erases" with a swipe of the slider. Improv Electronics have taken these to the next level and modernized them into the Boogie Board!

Some negatives include the lack of a place to store the stylus when not in use, no ability to save and inability to replace the battery. They do have a Neoprene Sleeve specifically designed for the Boogie Board tablet that protects the board and includes a space for the stylus without adding a bunch of size or weight. The Boogie Board comes with a 3V watch battery that is good for 50,000 erase cycles which comes out to about 20 erases a day for more than six years, so the battery issue isn't as bad as it sounds. Not being able to save is another issue but this is more for jotting down quick notes and less about writing papers. Some have suggested to use your phone or camera to take a quick picture if it is something you want to hold on to.

Bottom Line

This is a great device and while there are some minor drawbacks, these are minimal compared to the flexibility and the number of uses are seemingly unlimited. I've been using the Neon Green 8.5" Boogie Board for the past few days and keep finding new uses. The primary use I have is taking down quick notes, voice mail messages, various thoughts and doodles! I didn't realize how much I liked to doodle while on the phone, but now I don't have to waste paper when all I do is throw them away anyway. My 5-year-old daughter loves her magnetic doodler and now she prefers to play with this instead. The accuracy of the drawings is much better and she loves pushing the only button on the board to erase everything and start over again.

What is the No Button?

The No Button is only the easiest way to say "No!" while saving your voice!

Simply press the button and hear a resounding "No!" come out of the button in 10 different ways, such as "No!", "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no", "N. O." and "For the last time, No!"

What would I do with a No Button?

The founders of the no button are parents who seemed to be repeating the same things to their kids over and over. They dreamed of a button that would just say it for them. Eventually they noticed that "No" is the most often used phrase followed by "clean your room," so they designed a button that would say the "No's" for them.

But you don't have to limit the No Button to your kids. What about that neighbor that always wants to borrow something? "NO!" Or that employee at work that is always asking for time off? "NO!" There are limitless ways to use the No Button.

Angry Birds - On Thin Ice Game Review

Angry Birds On Thin Ice is the second Angry Birds game to come from the extremely popular game for iPhone and Android devices. The object of the game is to draw a Mission Card and set up the structure that is on the card with the supplied structure pieces. Then watch as your opponent launches the Angry Birds and tries to knock down the structure and the Pigs to win points.

There are even new features including pigs with helmets, breakable ice block building pieces, an "exploding" TNT box and a new large red Angry Bird character. There are only two Angry Birds this time with a yellow bird in addition to the larger red bird, along with three pigs, of which two can wear the construction hats.

While it is rated for Ages 5+, we noticed that setting up the various structures can take some time and patience. If patience isn't one of your or your child's strong suits, then be prepared! Also, pieces do fly all over the place so having some sort of a backdrop like the side of a couch or a wall may help in the spreading of the pieces all over the place. There is a lot of fun to be had playing, but I can't say this is more fun than the iPhone, iPad or Android versions since the games will reset the pieces for you, however it is still a lot of fun. Show Your Hearts for the Berry Family

Learning Express stores in Houston are showing our hearts today to raise money for the children of Robin and Joshua Berry. Both parents were tragically killed in an auto accident over the July 4th holiday weekend while driving through Fort Stockton, Texas, on their way back home from a family vacation in Colorado. The three children, Peter, 9, Aaron, 8, and Willa, 6, survived, however, both boys are being treated for multiple spinal injuries and Willa suffered a broken arm and ankle.

Our family of stores located in Cypress, Katy, Pearland and Town and Country are all joining together today, August 11th, to raise money to help support the rehabilitation and growth of the Berry children. Twenty percent of the sales of all four Houston-area stores will be donated to the Joshua and Robin Berry Children's Trust.

While I did not know the family personally, I did have the pleasure to meet Joshua during the NCAA Final Four tournament this past year where we were both photo-runners for the Associated Press. Here is one of the pictures from the stadium after the final game.

Our hope is that together we can do a small part in helping raise the necessary funds to aid these now orphaned children's ongoing needs, including medical rehabilitation, physical therapy, psychological support and education. With your help, we can make a difference!

Want something to get the kids off the couch? This is it! Don't call the Beamo Flying Disc a "big frisbee" because it is much more than that. Depending on age and strength of the thrower, the Beamo can soar up to 150 feet. Try catching the Beamo on your arm or easily grab the spandex fabric cover. Review: WEDGiTS Construction Blocks

WEDGiTS construction blocks are one of my favorite toys we sell in the store. They’re super-colorful, soft-edged blocks that can be stacked, sorted and wedged together to create a masterpiece. You can stack them vertically, sideways, or even tilted on their axis.

What’s cool is that Wedgits span across all age groups. The Wee Wedgits are for early childhood ages 1-3 years. These are squishy-soft and engage tactile and motor skills that are necessary for development.

For the preschool kiddos the basic Wedgits are harder but still have the same rounded edges. The Starter Set comes with 15 blocks for unlimited configurations and makes for a perfect gift. It’s got just the right amount of blocks to well...get started! And all of the standard-size Wedgits' sets can be combined for even larger designs! There are also design books that take you step by step through more complex designs.

My favorite are the mini Wedgits. These sets have much smaller pieces and come in different designs like an owl, a frog, or a dog, but can also be used in unlimited creative designs. These are geared toward kids ages 5+. If you have an only child, have no fear! Wedgits can be played solo or with friends. And the best bonus - they’re DISHWASHER SAFE!!

Another huge plus is that Wedgits are an excellent toy for autistic children. Parents often come in and ask for recommendations for their autistic son or daughter, often mentioning that they get frustrated really easily. What do I say to those fretful parents? Have no fear, Wedgits to the rescue! They are meant for hours of play and endless possibilities, lessening the chance of boredom and frustration.

Review: Bath Time: Flow and Fill Spout

Do you leave the water running in the tub while your kids take a bath?
Are you looking for that perfect bath toy for your child?

Look no further than the Flow N Fill Spout from the Yookidoo line of International Playthings. Both of our daughters, Emma (3 1/2) and Brooke (8 months), love this colorful and playful fountain. For now, Brooke likes to listen to the water and watch it go through the cups, while Emma loves to play with the three different activity cups. The first cup, "Greenie", has a little propeller that spins as the water flows through. The blue cup has small holes in the bottom to act like a little shower, while the red cup has a hidden surprise in the form of a peek-a-boo friend that rises with the water level in the cup! If your kids are fans of Handy Manny, the design reminds me a lot of the tools on the show.

After taking the spout out of the packaging, you will need to unscrew the back to install 3 "AA" batteries (not included). Once it is back together and sealed, you attach the nice-sized suction cup to the side of the bathtub. Once you fill the tub with water, make sure the water level is above the bottom of the tube that sticks down. This tube is what takes the water up from the bathtub and out through the swiveling spout. *NOTE* Be careful not to run it without water or you can burn out the pump that sits behind the orange face!

Now it's time for fun! Press the nose on the spout's orange face to turn on the spout. In seconds you will see water flowing in an endless stream out the top of the spout. Your child can play with any of the activity cups individually, or all at once. Turning off is just as easy as turning it on, simply press the orange face again. A great toy that demonstrates how water moves and motivates.

One of the best parts for us parents is there is no continuous running of the faucet, so you don't waste water!

Review: Games: Sumoku by Blue Orange Games

We just received our first shipment of a great new game called sumoku from Blue Orange Games. Think of Scrabble meets Bananagrams meets Sudoku. There are several ways to play the game but the most basic is similar to Bananagrams except you use numbers instead of letters.

To start, each player (up to 8) takes eight tiles from the center and turns them face-up in front of them. One player rolls the colored die to determine the "key number". The goal is to build rows and columns that add up to multiples of the key number. Each row or column must intersect with another row or column. Watch out though because you cannot repeat a color in the same row or column!

After each turn you add up the tiles in your row or column to get your score for that turn. The game ends when there are no more playable tiles. Each player adds up the values of their remaining stock and deducts the value from their point total. The player with the highest total wins.

This is an excellent game for developing and practicing math skills. It is targeted at ages 9 to Adult and play time is typically between 10 and 30 minutes. You get 96 colorful numbered tiles, 1 die, illustrated rules, and a very convenient, brightly colored travel pouch.

Other variations of sumoku are Solo Sumoku (for solitary play), Speed Sumoku (where the object is to get rid of your tiles as quickly as possible), and Team Sumoku (where cooperation is most important).
